Plastic storage bins don't need to be boring, pedestrian items. Decorate the bins so that they match the rest of your decor, making them a point of visual interest in the room instead of something you want to hide in the back of the closet.

Cloth-Covered Table

Turn a plastic storage bin into a low table with a piece of linen cloth in white, cream, or a subtle pattern. Drape the linen over the bin like a tablecloth and place a small flower arrangement on top. This method is most appropriate for bins containing items that are not used very often, like seasonal items. If there are pets or small children in the house, place the bin on a side table to raise it higher off the ground before covering it.

Decorating with Ribbons

Glue or simply tie lengths of ribbon around a clear plastic storage bin to fit it in with the colour scheme of the room, without hiding the contents. Different colours and widths of ribbons glued diagonally across the sides of the bin makes a striking statement. Attach ribbon to the lid and add one or two bows for a finishing touch. A glue gun helps you glue on the ribbons securely without making a mess.

Painted Storage Bins

Stencils and paint designed for use on plastic are another way to spruce up clear plastic storage bins without blocking your view of the items stored inside. A simple, repeated design like flowers or leaves and twining vines looks very elegant in a kitchen or bedroom. For a child's room, paint designs like stars or smiley faces in bright, primary colours. Special antique-finish paints make a plastic bin look like ceramic or stone.

Fabric-Covered Bins

Fabric also makes a suitable covering for plastic bins. A pattern that ties in to upholstery or bedding elsewhere in the room is an attractive fashion statement. Glue the fabric to the lid only, or cover the sides as well. Covering the sides does prevent you seeing what's inside clear plastic containers, however. Fabric-covered plastic bins work well as toy boxes or to store holiday ornaments.
