Homemade decorations are always popular for families with small children who can get involved in the creation of an important part of the Christmas festivities. The scent and appearance of oranges and cinnamon are often found in mass produced Christmas decorations; these natural ingredients can be bought in their natural form and turned into attractive decorations for little cost and a little time on the part of the person making the decorations.

The use of garlands during the Christmas period and in earlier parts of history to celebrate the mid Winter festival dates back thousands of years. In Christian religions the use of evergreens to create circular wreaths and garlands is used to symbolise eternal life and the never ending nature of the love of God, according to Reindeer Land. In history garlands were made from a variety of natural things, including flowers, pine cones and crops grown in rural areas used as offerings for a good harvest in the coming months.

Homemade garland

The process of creating a homemade orange and cinnamon garland is a relatively simple one requiring a few tools and string for threading the oranges and cinnamon sticks. Begin by peeling the required number of oranges and cutting the peel into four pieces before placing the orange peel on kebab scewers; these pieces of peel are placed beside any source of heat to dry out over a few days, ArtsnCrafts-Ideas reports. Holes are drilled through the centre of the cinnamon sticks and the dried orange peel to allow them to be threaded onto a piece of string, knots are tied at each end of the string to complete the garland.

Pieces of orange and cinnamon sticks are used to create a large variety of Christmas decorations, including hanging tree decorations and wreaths, Daisy Shop reports. Pieces of dried orange and cinnamon are often tied together for hanging on trees to form simple homemade decorations. The scents of orange and cinnamon are associated by many people with Christmas and are included in homemade decorations to provide fragrances across the Christmas period. Orange and cinnamon can also be included in fragranced items, such as pot pourri that are pleasing on both the eyes and nose.

Creating homemade decorations

Many people do not see why they should create their own Christmas decorations instead of simply buying mass produced decorations and placing them around a home or business. For families with small children the creation of homemade Christmas decorations can be a bonding experience and bring a sense of pride to the children as they help a parent make a homemade orange cinnamon garland. As it is made from natural materials a homemade orange cinnamon garland can be composted at the end of the Christmas period to avoid creating a large amount of waste.
