The rich organic citric acid in lemon juice supposedly reduces the appearance of wrinkles and laughter lines. With strong exfoliating properties and high vitamin C content, many commercial anti-ageing products contain lemon juice as a key ingredient. With the health and vitality market thriving, the opportunity to reduce the effect of ageing provides instant appeal for consumers seeking a fresh and youthful appearance. Even those who find commercial products unaffordable use lemon juice as an addition to their home remedies.

Home exfoliation remedies

Vitamin C, a key component in lemon juice, produces collagen that revitalises skin to make it softer and more supple. Daily exfoliation rids the face of dead skin cells and the properties of citric acid tighten the facial surface to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and laughter lines. Cutting a lemon, sprinkling sugar onto the fruit of one-half and rubbing it against the skin for two to three minutes is a simple way to exfoliate. Remember to wash the face thoroughly with water and moisturise afterwards.

Astringents shrink and constrict skin after application; consumers use products such as calamine lotion and witch hazel for this purpose. Astringents also clear pores to prevent the damaging clogs that lead to blemishes or spots on the face. Squeeze lemon juice directly into a suitable container and soak it into a ball of cotton wool before rubbing generously over the face. Leave to settle for five minutes and rinse thoroughly with copious amounts of warm water. In addition to cleansing the pores, lemon juice astringent eliminates harmful toxins that result in wrinkles.

How lemon juice works

Lemon juice makes a more affordable alternative to commercial products that not only removes dead skin cells, but also fights off the bacteria that can causes premature ageing. Removing dead cells and bacteria encourages the growth of new cells and subsequently, lemon juice serves as an ideal solution for rejuvenating ageing skin. Regular treatments using lemon juice leave the skin looking younger, fresher and clearer. Just as importantly, home remedies that genuinely work are affordable for everybody.

Lemon juice and sensitive skin

The only downside to using lemon juice as an anti-ageing treatment is the dryness it causes on sensitive skin. However, this does not mean that use should be discouraged completely. Instead, keep treatments down to two applications each week instead of lemon juice on a daily basis. Remember to apply moisturiser after every treatment and, if your skin is highly sensitive, restrict application strictly to the areas where wrinkles and laughter lines exist.
