A cartomizer is a development in e-cigarette technology that allows the smoker to dispose of the cart that holds the e-liquid, and the atomiser, which heats the liquid, in one unit. Previously, users had to clean these items, which was labour intensive and diminished the convenience of the e-cigarette relative to traditional cigarettes. Cartomizers are a few dollars apiece and can last a few weeks. Some are pre-filled with juice, but empty units are available to fill with your own, homemade juice.

Things you need
- Distilled water
- Vegetable glycerine or propylene glycol
- E-liquid flavouring
- Herbs (optional)
Use a measured syringe that can hold at least 1ml and purchase small bottles or other receptacles. You may use an empty liquid capsule from an e-cigarette if you are making a very small batch to simply refill a cartomizer. Once you determine how large your batch will be, you can adjust your initial ingredients to meet your needs.
Determine what flavour you wish to create. In smaller batches, you will be able to experiment and try more flavours. Manufacturers create liquids in flavours which can be as sweet or as savoury as your imagination. Be sure to note whether the flavouring contains nicotine and what percentage, if it does. Some will have no nicotine while other varieties have up to 48mg, which is extremely high.
Determine the amount of vapour you want. Vapour, or exhaled smoke, content will be determined by whether you use vegetable glycerine (VG) or propylene glycol (PG.) Vapour is also contingent on the amount of water you use, the more water creating less vapour. When you are starting out mixing your own cartomizer juices, you will likely need to experiment with flavour, vapour and nicotine content. Remember that nicotine is a poison, so be very careful with that substance.
Mix a nicotine-free solution with these levels: 15 per cent water, 15 per cent flavouring and 70 per cent vegetable glycerine or propylene glycol. For nicotine users, the percentages are: 10 per cent water, 10 per cent flavouring, 60 per cent vegetable glycerine or propylene glycol and 20 per cent nicotine liquid. Increase the nicotine to 30 per cent if it's already mixed with a flavouring.
Tips and warnings
- Nicotine is a dangerous substance, so always use gloves and eye protection when handling it. You may also wish to wear a long-sleeved shirt or more protective covering when mixing your cartomizer juice.
