How to Make My Pictures Not Stretch in WordPress
Build a website with WordPress. (Hemera Technologies/ Images)

WordPress is one of the more popular content management system, or CMS, programs that can be installed directly into your domain to be used to build your site. Currently in version 3.2, WordPress uses some themes that cause pictures to be stretched in posts and pages. This is often fixed in subsequent versions. If you are still using a version or a theme that causes this stretching, there are some simple fixes for the problem.

  1. 1

    Click the "Appearance" > "Edit" link on the left side of the Dashboard. The problem with pictures stretching is usually found in the theme's CSS file, and clicking "Edit" always opens the Stylesheet.css file for editing.

  2. 2

    Look for a line that starts with "#content." If it is followed by a static width or height dimension, it could cause stretching for every image uploaded to your site. If, for instance, it says "#content {width: 600px;float: left;}" then it will stretch or pinch every image into a 600px width.

  3. 3

    Add the to "#content img.alignleft {padding: 5px; margin: 0 8px 2px 0; border: #000000 1px solid; display: inline; float: left;}" and delete the width tag from the original alignright and alignleft classes, so that it reads:

    float: left;

    float: right;

  4. 4

    Click "Update" at the bottom of the window to save your edits.

Tips and warnings

  • The simplest fix is to upgrade to the newest version supported by your Web host. As of July, 2011, most Web hosts support 3.1+. If you find that it is the theme causing the problem, consider changing the theme.
  • You can also edit the width and height when you insert the image, using the HTML view in the text editor, but changing the CSS is a more comprehensive solution.
