How to Switch an iPod to MSC Mode

Updated April 17, 2017

The Apple iPod is a portable media player that offers the ability to play music, watch videos and view photos. In addition, some models come with mobile e-mail, FM tuner and automatic song selection based on your most recently played music genre. You can also use your iPod as a storage device if you need to offload applications from your computer. You will have to switch it to MSC mode, which you do through the iTunes application.

Connect one end of your iPod's data cable to your computer's USB port and the other end to your iPod's data port.

Double-click the iTunes icon if the program does not open upon connecting your iPod.

Click the iPod icon under "Devices" and click "Summary."

Place a check mark in the box next to "Enable Disk Use." Your iPod will now be in MSC mode. You can switch out of MSC mode by removing the check mark next to "Enable Disk Use."
