Facebook users can create events for all sorts of occasions, and making an event public means anyone can be added to the guest list. If you're on the list to an event you'd rather not attend, clicking "No" on the invite means you'll still show up on the guest list for others to see. A more discreet option is to un-invite yourself to the event, which doesn't require that you respond to the invitation at all. This will remove the event from your Facebook page as well.
