You probably primarily use Facebook to stay in contact with your Facebook "friends," who can be anything from true friends to business acquaintances. You can communicate with these friends in a variety of ways, from status updates to messages to Facebook chat. Your communication options with Facebook members who are not your friends are more limited. For example, Facebook's chat feature allows you to chat only with your friends. You can, however, send private messages to non-friends.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Visit the public part of the profile of the person to whom you wish to send a message. Depending on his privacy settings, you may be able to see little other than his name and profile picture, or you may be able to view his entire profile. You can get to his profile either by using Facebook's search function or, if he is a friend of a friend, by clicking his name where it appears in your friend's friend list.

  2. 2

Click the "Send Message" button located in the upper right corner of the Facebook profile you are viewing. This is the same place as it is located when you are messaging a friend. This opens a new window containing a blank message.

  3. 3

Type a subject for your message and then the body of your desired message into the appropriate fields. When you are done, click "Send" to send the message.
