Chiffon is a light, floaty fabric which adds ethereal beauty to whatever project you are working on. The challenge in working with chiffon is finding an effective and attractive way of hemming the raw edges of the fabric. While a rolled hem is generally used for professional finishes, it does require having special tools. Luckily, there is a simple way to mimic the look and feel of a rolled hem using just an ordinary sewing machine.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

Things you need

  • Iron
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors

  1. 1

Lay the chiffon down in front of you with the right side of the fabric facing down. Fold up the raw edge of the chiffon by 1/2 inch and press the fold in place with an iron.

  2. 2

Sew a straight seam along the very edge of the fold using your sewing machine. The stitches should be made 1/8 inch away from the edge to keep the hem as narrow as possible.

  3. 3

Trim away the raw edges of fabric from above the stitched line to remove the excess. Cut the fabric as close to the seam as you can without cutting into the stitching. Work slowly so you don't accidentally cut into the good part of the chiffon.

  4. 4

Fold up the trimmed row of stitching so the cut edge is now hidden within the fold. Make the fold right above the stitching so the hem stays narrow. Press the fold down with an iron to keep it in place.

  5. 5

Sew the edge with a straight stitch to keep the fold closed and contain the raw edges. Press the hem when you are finished sewing to give the chiffon a clean, sharp look.

Tips and warnings

  • Use the hemming instructions for chiffon to finish any lightweight, sheer materials.
  • Do not attempt to iron your chiffon unless you are sure it is heat-safe. Try testing a small scrap of the fabric first before working on your main project.
