Making a simple light circuit, using items you probably have around your home, is a great project to get your kids to do when they're showing signs of boredom. It's constructive, educational and the kids get an end result from their work. The best way is to draw a quick wiring diagram they can easily follow for the project. If you get all the items needed on a table, they can use the diagram to complete the light circuit.

  1. 1

Draw a light bulb on a sheet of paper using a blue coloured pen. You don't need to be good at drawing to do this project, so long as the drawings have some resemblance to the actual items. Write the word "Light" under the drawing for clarity. On one side of the base of the drawing of the light bulb write "+" and on the other side write "-." This shows the two terminal connections on a light bulb.

  2. 2

Draw the shape of a battery elsewhere on the sheet of paper using a blue pen. Draw a slightly raised part on the top of the drawing, the same as on an AA battery. Write "+" next to it and at the bottom of the drawing write "-." Write "Battery" under the drawing.

  3. 3

Draw a switch centrally between the drawing of the light bulb and the battery. Write "Switch" next to it and then write "In" on the top of the drawing and "Out" on the bottom.

  4. 4

Use a red pen and draw line between the "+" on the battery and the "In" on the light switch. Draw another red line from the "Out" on the switch to the "+" on the light bulb.

  5. 5

Draw a black continuous line from the "-" on the light bulb to the "-" on the battery. This completes a simple series light circuit diagram for the kids' project.

Tips and warnings

  • When your kids make the light circuit project they can improvise a switch by using a couple of paper clips attached to wires. Just get them to touch the clips together and the light illuminates, once the rest of the circuit is complete. Use strips of electrical tape to hold the wires on the battery and light bulb.
