"Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" gives players a chance to battle each other on modern day battlefields using advanced military technology and weapons. The game allows the player to change the key bindings for the standard controls from the options menu. If a player is looking to create their own key bindings, such as customising communication macros, they can do so by manually adding their commands to the profile's configuration file.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Navigate to the "Modern Warfare" profile folder in Microsoft Windows. If the game was installed using the default location, it will be at "C:\Program\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\player\profiles." You will see folders that correspond to every profile that has been created in the game. Open the desired profile's folder.

  2. 2

Right click on the "config_mp.cfg" file and select "Copy." Right-click again on an empty section of the colder and select "Paste." This creates a copy of the configuration file in the folder that will be used as a backup in case something goes wrong.

  3. 3

Open the "config_mp.cfg" in Microsoft WordPad. Notepad will not be able to read or save the file correctly. To open the file, right-click on it and highlight "Open With," select "WordPad" from the options displayed.

  4. 4

Add your key bindings to the configuration file. The format for a key binding is "bind (Key) "(Command)"" (without the outside quotes). To bind the "F7" key to broadcast the words "Follow Me" to other players every time it is pressed, you would enter "bind F7 "say Follow Me" " (without the outside quotes). Save the file when finished.

  5. 5

Set temporary bindings during game play through the console. While in a game press the tilde key "~" located to the left of the "1" key. Type "/" followed by the bind command in the exact same format as in the configuration file. A temporary binding for "F7" will be "/bind F7 "say Follow Me" " (without the outside quotes).

Tips and warnings

  • Colour can be added to Say commands by included one of the 10 set colour codes, each in the format of "^(number)" with the number anything from 0 to 9. The command for example, will be "bind F7 "say ^2 Follow Me" "with all text after the colour code appearing as the set colour. Multiple colours can be used in the same command. Experiment with the different codes to discover what colour they produce.
  • Do not make any other changes to the profile file. Do not manually bind keys that have been already set by the game. Each key can only have one command bound to it and multiple commands bound to the same key will not function.
