Extracting video from a DVD gives you VIDEO_TS files, which occupy a lot of hard drive space and won't play in some video players or cellphones. By converting VIDEO_TS files to AVI, XviD or DivX, you can keep only the main DVD feature and discard the extras to save room. AVI, or Audio Video Interleave, acts as a file container for a video codec such as DivX or Xvid. Free video converters for Mac allow you to convert, compress and resize your digital video.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Visit to download the latest version of the free XviD and DivX encoder. Install and launch FFMPEGX.

  2. 2

Click "Open" to search for VIDEO_TS folders on your computer. Click a folder to select it, and click "Choose" to load the folder in the converter.

  3. 3

Click the "Video Codec" menu. Click "XviD Encoder" or "DivX Encoder," depending on your preference. Both video formats will create an AVI file.

  4. 4

Click "Encode." The conversion progress displays in the "Progress" window.

  1. 1

Visit to download the Mac OS X version of the free conversion software. Double-click the DMG file and install Handbrake.

  2. 2

Run Handbrake. Click "Source" in the upper left corner of the screen. Search your hard drive for VIDEO_TS folders and double-click a folder to see its contents.

  3. 3

Double-click the IFO file inside the VIDEO_TS folder. The IFO file has the file name "VIDEO_TS_01," and adding this file to Handbrake loads the entire video in the converter.

  4. 4

Click "Profile." Choose "Xvid" or "DivX" from the menu. Click "Start" to convert the video or click "Add to Queue" to create a list of several videos to convert together.

    4 Easy Soft

  1. 1

Visit to download the Mac XviD and DivX converter. Install and launch the converter.

  2. 2

Click "Add Video" and add the IFO file from a VIDEO_TS folder. Click "Preferences" and choose "Xvid" or "DivX" as your output format.

  3. 3

Click "Effect" to open the video-editing preferences menu. Drag the sliders up or down to adjust the brightness, contrast and saturation of your video.

  4. 4

Click the blue arrow button in the lower right corner of the screen to start the conversion.

Tips and warnings

  • Convert VIDEO_TS files in the background while working in other applications. According to the FFMPEGX website for Mac OS X-compatible Unix open-source video and audio processing tools, Mac OS X uses processing resources as needed and will not crash.
