IPA files are the install files for iPhone applications. The IPA file is extracted and installed by Installous, a program designed for installing IPA files. Copying an IPA file from the computer to the Installous directory to be installed takes less than a two minutes but does require the use of third party software. It can not be done with native Windows or Mac software. Fortunately, this software is free to download and simple to use.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Connect the iPhone to the computer using the provided USB cable.

  2. 2

Download and install an iPhone browser software program to the computer. There are many different free iPhone browsers to choose from. An iPhone browser software program lets the user explore and edit the file directories on the iPhone from the computer. This can not be done without the use of this software; iTunes nor Windows can facilitate this. This is required for copying the IPA file to Installous.

  3. 3

Open the iPhone browser software on the computer.

  4. 4

Navigate to the iPhone directory "User/Documents/Installous/Downloads" using the iPhone browser. This is where IPA files that Installous uses will be stored.

  5. 5

Locate the IPA file on the computer.

  6. 6

Drag the IPA file into the opened "User/Documents/Installous/Downloads" directory. This will copy the IPA file to the Installous install directory on the iPhone. This should take less than a minute.

  7. 7

Open Installous on the iPhone and click "Downloads." The copied IPA file should be there.
