Cinema 4D is a widely used 3-D animation and modelling application offered by the Maxon corporation. Cinema 4D has an array of tools and functions for creating virtually anything you can imagine, from desert islands and high mountains to cityscapes and ocean depths. It can even be used to create a simple animation of a rotating Earth. The process for doing this is surprisingly simple.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Download a map image of the earth to your computer.

  2. 2

Start Cinema 4D. Go to the "Object" icons at the top and click on the "Sphere" to make it appear in the view. Go to the toolbar on the left and click on the "Make Editable" icon.

  3. 3

Select "File" in the "Material" panel and click "New Material." Double-click this new material and click on the "Texture" browse button. Choose the earth map you loaded. Drag the resulting material onto the sphere.

  4. 4

Select "Animation" from the menu at the top and choose "Autokeying." Go to the "Timeline" and click on the frame where you want your animation to end. Use the "Rotate" tool to rotate the Earth in the view.

  5. 5

Click on the "Play" button in the timeline to view your animation. Save your work.
