Photo stitching is the process of aligning two or more images of the same scene to create a panorama picture. There are many photo editing programs that are designed to do this for you, but if you want more control over the process you can use the GIMP photo editing software. GIMP is a free program that can be downloaded off of the Internet. It is very similar to Adobe Photoshop and uses a lot of the same tools and effects.

Click "File" in the navigation bar of GIMP photo editor and select "New" from the drop down menu. In the dialogue box that opens up select the image size you want to create. Click the "Advanced Options" tab and select "RGB Color" in the colour space field and "Transparency" for "Fill with" click "OK" and you a new blank file will appear on the screen.

Click "File" and select "Open as Layers" from the drop down menu. Use your cursor to navigate to the folder containing the first image you want to use. Highlight the file and click "OK" to open the image. Click hold and drag the image to position you want this picture to appear in your panorama. If you are working from left to right then position the picture on the left side of the page.

  • Highlight the file and click "OK" to open the image.

Open a second picture using the same step as above. When the picture appears in the window carefully align the second picture with the first. When aligning this and subsequent pictures accuracy is needed in order for the final product to look like it is one large picture. Repeat this step until all the pictures you want to use in your photo stitch are used.

Click "Layer" and select "Merge Down" this will stitch the pictures together and allow you to save your work as a JPEG file.
