When playing cowboys and Wild West games, you need the right equipment. One essential part of the game is a sheriff's badge for a law enforcement costume. A badge signifies legitimate authority and power, and it can be constructed out of simple household materials. A sheriff's badge is a simple craft that is ideal for pretend play or a Halloween costume. The badge starts with a five-pointed star and then should be attached to clothing with a safety pin.

Instructions

  1. 1

Print out a free sheriff's badge template from websites such as Free Printables or Says It. These sites offer badges that can be modified or printed out as is. Otherwise, you can draw a five-pointed star yourself as a template.

  2. 2

Cut out the printed template and place it over a piece of scrap cardboard. You may use an old shoebox or cereal box for the scrap cardboard.

  3. 3

Trace the template onto the cardboard with a pencil. Cut out the cardboard badge with scissors.

  4. 4

Decorate the sheriff's badge with coloured markers. Colour most of it yellow so it looks like a gold badge and be sure to write the word "Sheriff" across the middle of it.

  5. 5

Tape a safety pin to the back of your sheriff's badge. Leave the side of the safety pin that opens free from tape, so you can easily pin it to your clothing.

Tips and warnings

  • Experiment with different badge shapes, styles and colours for this craft.
  • A utility knife can be used to cut the badge out of cardboard. You may be able to cut out finer details with a knife.
  • For a cowboy-themed birthday party, create sheriff's badge cookies with a star cookie cutter. Frost the cookies white and write "sheriff" with a black food-colouring pen.
  • Children need adult supervision for this project.
