You can post static images to your Tumblr blog in a few seconds without any problems. However, if you have ever tried to post an animated gif image on Tumblr, you know that they often do not work properly. You either lose the animation or see nothing but a grey box. You can post animated gifs to Tumblr but you need to use a different process than posting a static image.

Upload your gif to a photo sharing site such as TwitPic, TinyPic or Imgur. After uploading the gif right-click on it and select "Copy Image Location."
Login to your Tumblr blog. Click the "Text" icon to go to the new post page.
Click the "Insert/Edit Image" button.
Paste the gif URL into the "Image URL" field and click the "Insert" button.
Click "Create Post."
