Top a cake with a glitzy, glamorous beaded ring cake topper or keep everything on the cake edible and make the ring from fondant. Make the cake for an engagement party or a wedding reception. You can top it with a single ring or embellish the tiers of the cake with miniature beaded or edible rings using your choice of colours to coordinate with the event's colour scheme.

Instructions

  1. 1

Cut a piece of medium-gauge jewellery wire to a length of approximately 12 inches. This piece of wire will make a ring with a diameter of approximately 4 inches. Make the piece of wire smaller for a small cake topper or augment the length for an even larger cake topper.

  2. 2

Thread the beads of your choice onto the wire, leaving ¼-inch to ½-inch empty at each end.

  3. 3

Use a pair of thin-nosed pliers to twist the two ends of the wire together to make the circle.

  4. 4

Spread the excess ends of the wires open to make a "V" shape.

  5. 5

Insert the ends of the wires into the top of the cake.

  1. 1

Use your hands to roll out a piece of fondant into a tubular shape. The length of the fondant should equal approximately 10 inches for a cake topper with a diameter of about 4 inches. Modify the length of the fondant to accommodate a larger or smaller ring.

  2. 2

Shape the fondant into a circle.

  3. 3

Moisten the ends of the fondant with a little bit of water and press the ends together. Smooth the fondant gently over the seam line between the two pieces.

  4. 4

Place the ring onto a piece of waxed paper to dry for 24 hours.

  5. 5

Combine two spoonfuls of lustre dust with a little bit of lemon juice. Add enough of the lemon juice to make the mixture liquid. Paint the fondant ring with the mixture to give the ring a glittery shine.

Tips and warnings

  • Make the fondant ring look metallic by using a white fondant for a silver or platinum ring, or yellow fondant for a gold or bronze ring. Mix the lemon juice with silver or gold lustre dust and paint the ring.
