How to Convert X264 to AVI With FFMPEG
Many online videos are encoded in x264. (Zedcor Wholly Owned/ Images)

VideoLan's x264 is a video codec that many online video streams use, including Hulu and YouTube. As a result, many movies you download or rip online may come in the x264 codec as a MOV file. You can convert an x264 MOV into a regular AVI with FFmpeg. You simply need to modify the command-line code appropriately.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Place the x264 video file in your "My Videos" folder.

  2. 2

Open FFmpeg from your desktop or "Start" menu.

  3. 3

Type in the following: "ffmpeg -i -vcodec copy -acodec copy --o NAME2.avi" (without quotes).

  4. 4

Change "NAME1" to the name of your x264 file.

  5. 5

Change "NAME2" to the name of your output file.

  6. 6

    Hit the "Enter" key.
