How to Make Your Own Swim Caps

Updated July 20, 2017

If going to the pool is a part of your weekly routine, you probably spend a fair amount of time and money in search of the perfect swim cap. Pool chemicals are harsh on silicone and latex swim caps, decreasing their lifespan and sending you back to the store for a new cap. Nylon swim caps last longer, but tend not to hold onto your skin as well as the other materials. However, you can make your own nylon swim cap tailored specifically for your head.

Measure the circumference and height of your head. Measure from your forehead to the back of your head to get the circumference.

Draw a profile of the swim cap using your measurements. Divide your total head circumference measurement in half to give you the width for the profile.

Cut out two profile patterns, one for each side.

Cut a 15-inch to 19-inch section of nylon-Lycra material. The size depends on your head circumference.

Pin the two profile patterns front-to-front onto the nylon-Lycra material.

Cut the nylon-Lycra material around the pattern. Remove the pattern and sew the edges of the material together. Allow 2 1/2 to 3 inches between the patterns for the width of your head.

Use the elastic give in the nylon-Lycra material to expand the width of the swim cap.
