How to Make a Dragon Stick Puppet

A dragon stick puppet uses sticks to direct the movement of the puppet. This kind of dragon puppet is often used during Chinese celebrations and events. However, you can use the dragon puppet for any activity, including a fantasy play about knights, princesses and dragons. You can make the dragon as simple or as complicated as you wish. Decorate the dragon with ribbons, sequins, glitter and other embellishments to make it suitable for a play or as a decoration.

Draw a head for the dragon on cardboard. Make the head about 5 inches long and 3 inches wide. Cut out the head with scissors. Trace the outline of the head onto another piece of cardboard, and cut out the second head piece.

Draw a tail for the dragon on the other side of the cereal box. Make the tail about 2 inches wide and 5 inches long. Cut out the tail, and trace the tail shape onto another piece of cardboard. Cut out the second tail piece.

Cut a strip of construction paper 4 inches wide and 30 inches long. Cut four 1-inch triangles from construction paper.

Glue the two heads together. Place the pointed end of the skewer between the two heads. Place one end of a triangle piece between the backs of the head pieces, with another end pointing to the left. Place one end of another triangle piece between the backs of the head pieces, with another end pointing to the right. You will use these triangles to glue the body of the dragon.

Repeat the gluing process for the tail pieces. Glue the pointed end of the skewer in the middle of the tail and the two triangle pieces to the side of the tail where you want to glue the body. Allow the head and tail pieces to dry for about four hours.

Fold the 30-inch piece of paper in half lengthwise, and glue the edges together. Fold the paper using an accordion style fold, with each side about 1 inch wide. Allow the glue to dry for several hours.

Tape one end of the accordion to the triangle pieces on the head. Tape the other end of the accordion to the triangle pieces connected to the tail.

Decorate the head and tail of the dragon as desired. Use the bamboo skewers to guide the dragon across the sky.
