Modern computers are capable of amazingly fast speeds, with some being capable of surpassing their advertised speeds. A CPU is rated at a given frequency, usually in either megahertz or gigahertz for modern devices. However, some CPU's can be pushed beyond this speed by adjusting some values in the computer's basic input/output system (BIOS). This practice is known as overclocking, since you are raising the clock rate of the CPU over its manufacturer's limit. The Intel Core2Duo CPU E8400 is a very capable overclocker, especially when paired with an Asus p5KPL-CM motherboard.

Turn on the computer.
Press the "Del" key immediately after powering on the computer to enter the BIOS.
Press the right arrow key to navigate to the "AI Tweaker" page of the BIOS.
Navigate to the "AI Overclock Tuner" setting and change the setting to "Manual" by using the enter key.
Navigate to "FSB Frequency" and type in a number about 10% higher than the number presently there. This will overclock the processor by increasing the clock frequency. You need to start with a small overclock to judge how well your system handles the increased speeds.
Press "F10" to exit and save your settings. You should now allow your computer to reboot. Make sure it is stable with this overclock. If it is, repeat the process and increase by another 10%. If your computer does not boot, turn it off completely and wait a minute before turning it back on. The BIOS will have reset the clock frequency to the default value.
Tips and warnings
- You RAM will have a lot to do with how far you can push the FSB Frequency. If you have 400MHz RAM, you can expect a stable overclock when the FSB Frequency is set to 400.
- Overclocking will increase the CPU heat output. You may want to purchase a bigger heat sink for your CPU to help keep it running cool.
