Marble cake is a classic dessert, which can be made using any yellow cake batter and cocoa powder. The process requires combining two colours of batter just enough to get the marbling colouring, without mixing the two colours together. Once this process is mastered it can be used to make cakes or cupcakes.

  1. 1

Prepare yellow cake batter. The mixture should be about the constancy of thick pancake batter. You can use boxed yellow cake mix.

  2. 2

Pour out 1/3 of the batter into a small bowl. For every cup of batter add 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder. Mix thoroughly, until the batter is a uniform brown colour.

  3. 3

Pour the rest of the yellow cake batter into the baking dish. Pour the chocolate cake batter on top, drizzling it batter to evenly cover the yellow layer.

  4. 4

Cut the chocolate batter into the yellow cake batter with a knife. Do not go over a spot more then once, because this can result in the two colours mixing together, instead of marbling. Start at one side of the baking dish and drag the knife in a swirl motion until you get to the other side of the dish. Make sure the knife is going all the way through the batter. For cupcakes, swirl one circle into the cupcake.

Tips and warnings

  • To make marble cakes of any colour, use food colouring instead of cocoa powder.
