Calibre is free software that organises your library of e-books and converts e-book files from one file format to another. Kindle for PC allows you to read e-books in the AZW, TXT, PDF, PRC and MOBI formats. By using the file converter in Calibre, it is possible to read e-books in the Kindle for PC program that were originally published in formats that are not supported by Kindle. Some settings in Calibre must be modified for the two programs to work together well.

Tips and warnings
- Removing the ticks next to the MOBI, PRC and AZW formats for use with Calibre's internal viewer causes the Kindle for PC application to open when you open the converted file for viewing from Calibre's library list.
- Calibre can open and read PRC and AZW files, but it does not support conversion to those formats.
