How to Make a Handbag-Shaped Cake

Updated November 21, 2016

When you are baking a cake for someone, it's a good idea to think of a theme that fits the personality. If you are creating a cake for someone who loves fashion and handbags, consider baking a cake shaped like a purse. Making a handbag-shaped purse is not as difficult as it may seem. And once you have created the cake's shape, decorate it so that it looks like one of her favourite handbags.

Place your cakes on a clean, flat surface. Using your serrated knife, cut a 1-inch slice off of the top edge of each cake. Cut a 2-inch slice off of the bottom edge of each cake.

Use your frosting knife to place a layer of frosting on one of the cakes. Stack the other cake on top of the bottom one, making sure that you line the top and bottom edges up perfectly. Use the serrated knife to trim any excess cake that does not line up.

Place the cakes onto the cake platter with the bottom edge, from which you cut the 2-inch slice, down. The cakes should look like the beginnings of a 3-D handbag.

Apply a layer of frosting to the cake. Consider using a bright colour, such as yellow or pink, to create a whimsical handbag. Otherwise, choose the colour of her favourite handbag.

Create the handbag's strap with a liquorice rope. Place each end of the liquorice rope in the top of the cake so that it loops over and resembles the bag's strap.

Decorate the handbag using an assortment of other items, such as candies. You could also use shapes cut out of fondant to place on the cake and further embellish it.
