How to get rid of silicone plastic odor

Updated February 21, 2017

Silicone can emit that strong odour of plastic. Over time this smell will dissipate, but in the meantime it can be off-putting. If you are giving the silicone plastic to a child or using it to prepare food, you might want to remove the odour first with a good soak. Use natural products you likely already have in your household.

Soak a clean cloth in white vinegar, a natural odour neutraliser.

Rub the cloth over the silicone plastic to remove the odour.

Mix 1 cup of baking soda with 3 cups of water if the smell is still noticeable. Baking soda is a natural odour absorber.

Soak the silicone plastic in the baking soda solution for several hours or overnight.

Scrub the silicone plastic with the baking soda solution. Rinse in clear water.
