How to Make a Fake Chocolate Cake

Show the average person a chocolate cake, and that person's mouth will start to water. But creating a mouth-watering chocolate cake that's a fake is a little more complicated than mixing up a batch of cake mix. Whether you are looking to create a convincing fake cake for pranking your friends and family, or need to craft a stage prop for your local community theatre's next production, putting together a fake chocolate cake is relatively simple.

Purchase two to three large round sponges, and trim down to 8 to 9 inches in diameter to approximate the size of most cakes. These type of sponges can be found at auto supply shops, as many people use them to wash their cars without damaging the paint.

Spread a layer of chocolate frosting on top of each sponge, and stack them together so they look like a layer cake. Smooth additional frosting over the top and sides of the stacked sponges until you are satisfied with the likeness of the fake cake to a real one.

Covering fake cake with real chocolate frosting is perfect for pranking your friends up close. It will look like a real cake, but when they go to cut into it, they'll realise they've been tricked.

Alternatively, substitute a fake frosting for real frosting. This is suitable for creating a fake chocolate cake to be used in stage productions and stored for years without spoiling. You can create fake frosting by spreading caulk over the fake cake. Once you've sculpted the texture with a putty knife so it looks like real frosting, allow it to dry. Then cover with brown paint.

Add decorations such as birthday candles, or other decorative accents like sugar roses purchased from your grocery store's baking aisle.


If you can't find round car washing sponges, use styrofoam rounds, available at your local craft store. Your local bakery may also have a similar material, known as "cake dummies".
