The Rheem Criterion II is an induced draft gas furnace with a direct spark ignitor, flame sensor, furnace jacket, integrated control and motor and an energy rating of 80 per cent. The furnace can be adjusted for horizontal, up, or down air flow depending upon placement and storage measurements. While the furnace ought to operate well with regular maintenance and care, you may have questions or problems with the unit. If this happens, some troubleshooting can often resolve the issue.

  1. 1

Connect the Rheem Criterion II furnace to a grounded three-prong outlet if the furnace is non-operational. Inspect the household fuse or circuit breaker and reset or replace as needed. Turn the main power switch to "On" and turn on the gas valve, located at the rear of the unit.

  2. 2

Unplug and turn off the furnace if the machine has power but isn't operating to full capacity. Remove the front access panel, and move the retaining rod out of place and pull the filter out. Clean the filter with a few drops of dish washing liquid and cold water. Rinse and air dry before sliding the filter back into position. Close the retaining rod before shutting the main access panel.

  3. 3

Close windows and doors in the home if the furnace doesn't seem to be heating as expected. Eliminate possible sources of drafts and move any objects that may be blocking return air grilles in the home as well as the vents on the furnace.

  4. 4

Avoid using kitchen exhaust fans excessively if the system doesn't seem to be operating well. Turn the thermostat to "Auto" to avoid using the furnace when not needed.

  5. 5

Disconnect power to the furnace and open the blower access panel if the motor or fan isn't running as expected. Clean the area with a soft brush or cloth to clean excess dirt or debris. Close the access panel before restoring power.

  6. 6

Contact Rheem for additional repair assistance as needed.
