Before the Internet, most PC games were played through a Local Area Network, or LAN. Through a LAN, gamers would hook their PCs up together while in the same room to engage in multiplayer gaming. However, for those friends and gamers who are separated by distance, LAN gaming is not an option and many games, such as Doom, can not be played multiplayer. With Hamachi, it is possible to create a LAN environment through the Internet allowing you to play LAN games without needing to be in the same room.

Instructions

  1. 1

Download and install the "Hamachi" program (see Reference).

  2. 2

Double-click the "LogMeIn Hamachi" icon on your desktop.

  3. 3

Click the "Power" button on the left side of the Hamachi window to turn the program on.

  4. 4

Click "Network" on the menu bar. Click "Create A New Network" from the pop-up menu.

  5. 5

Enter a new NetworkID and Password in the fields provided. The NetworkID and Password used for your network can be anything you wish. Click "OK." For anyone to join your network, they must click "Join An Existing Network" from the "Network" menu bar of their own Hamachi program and enter your NetworkID and Password. After this is complete, your friend will join your Hamachi LAN group.

  6. 6

Start the game you wish to play through a LAN. Rather than use your own personal IP to connect to each other, use the Hamachi LAN IP displayed on the Hamachi program next to the "Power" button. This number will always begin with a five. Once complete, you will be able to play LAN games easily over the Internet as Hamachi will simulate a LAN environment for you and your friends.
