Reinstallation steps may vary some depending upon the version of Windows you are attempting to reinstall and the model of Packard Bell computer. In every case, you will need the original recovery disks that came with your computer. It is also important to have CD copies of all software currently installed on your Packard Bell as these will have to be reinstalled once Windows has been successfully reinstalled.

Instructions

  1. 1

Back up all software and files on your Packard Bell including documents, pictures, videos and music. At this time, locate all of the software for any programs currently running on your Packard Bell computer. These programs might include your antivirus protection, your word processing program and your Internet service provider's software. This software will need to be reinstalled once you have reinstalled your Windows operating system.

  2. 2

Change your BIOS settings so that your computer will search on the CD drive for a start-up disk first. Your computer will normally search on your Packard Bell hard drive for the operating system. To change this, you must alter the BIOS settings. The easiest way to access them is by restarting your computer, then pressing the appropriate key. This will take you to your BIOS settings. Only experienced computer users should make changes to their BIOS settings.

Use the arrow keys to look through the menu for the start-up sequence settings which may be called "boot order." Once you've located the start-up sequence settings, press "Enter" to access them. Pressing the plus or minus key will cycle through the choices. Highlight "CD" and press "Enter" to make this the default setting. Press "Esc" to return to the menu and then "Save and Exit."

  4. 4

Place the Windows Recovery Disk in your CD drive and turn off the computer. Wait 30 seconds and then turn your Packard Bell computer back on. Your computer should boot to the CD drive now if you were successful in changing the BIOS settings.

  5. 5

Reinstall Windows on your Packard Bell computer by following the onscreen instructions. At some point, you will be asked for your Windows product key, so be sure to have this handy. If reinstalling Windows XP, you must also reinstall Windows XP Service Pack 2.

  6. 6

Reinstall your Internet service provider's software, along with word processing and antivirus software. Also, any other software you were using before the reinstallation. All files, pictures, music and videos must also be restored from your backup.

Tips and warnings

  • If possible, invite a tech-savvy friend over to help with this project. Sometimes errors occur that will require the expertise of a computer technician to solve.
  • Some older Packard Bell computers have a digital watermark located in the BIOS and the boot track of the hard disk. This is called a "tattoo." If it is altered, erased or damaged, the disk cannot boot because the BIOS will not recognise the tattoo on this disc drive.
