Manga is a Japanese form of illustration which plays an important role in an entire genre of graphic novels. These cartoons are typically of people in brightly coloured costumes, unusual hairstyles with a stylised and quirky shapes, and disproportionately large, round eyes. When drawing a manga schoolgirl, you will want to grab the viewer's attention with these manga characteristics.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Draw in a light circle for each girl's head. Sketch in a trapezoid to create the structure for each girl's chest and torso with the wider part of the shape at the top to form the basic structure for the shoulders and the narrower part to be the waist. Position the trapezoid slightly below the head circle. Lightly draw in a square for the hips and pelvis structure below the trapezoid.

  2. 2

Refer to your source image for the outline and positioning of the arms and legs. Sketch in the outline for the arms and legs with simple lines with few curves to indicate the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and knees. Make sure to draw one arm of each girl in a raised, waving position.

  3. 3

Flesh out the basic structure shapes of the girls' bodies by connecting the shapes with lines to represent the chin, neck, shoulders, and waist. Female manga chins tend to be small and pointy and they have narrow necks. Flesh out the arms by following the contours of the upper arm, elbow, forearm, and wrist. Draw in the hands and fingers, and feet with shoes.

  4. 4

Draw in the facial features of each girl's face. Place the eyes in the bottom third of the circle, and make the eyes disproportionately large and round for the size of the head. Place the nose and mouth near each other, about halfway between the eyes and the chin. Add in lines for eyebrows and a thick, curved line over each eye to represent the eyelid and long lashes.

  5. 5

Add hair to the head in a stylised manner with either pigtails and bows or short hair that forms around the face. Hair can have wispy, windswept stylisation.

  6. 6

Add the school uniform clothes. Top can be short or long sleeved with a flowing collar tied over the chest in a bow. Skirt can be mini, mid thigh, or mid shin and should have indications of pleating through vertical lines.

Tips and warnings

  • If you have difficulty drawing hands, you can position the non-waving hand behind the girls' backs to reduce the number of hands you need to draw.
