Liquid propane gas tanks for residential use are installed outside the home to safely supply fuel to such appliances as stoves, heaters and gas grills. The tank is equipped with a pressure gauge for monitoring the gas pressure inside, as well as a regulator for controlling the pressure flow through the lines. If you purchase and install a new appliance, it may be necessary to adjust the regulator pressure to suit the requirements of the appliance. Common household tools help you do the job.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

Things you need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Flat-blade screwdriver

  1. 1

Close the gas line between the regulator and the propane supply line to your appliances by turning the metal knob on the valve clockwise.

  2. 2

Remove the regulator cover by twisting the nut on the side of the regulator counterclockwise with the adjustable wrench.

  3. 3

Twist the pressure screw inside the regulator clockwise, with your screwdriver, to increase the gas pressure the regulator will allow through the line. Turn the screw the opposite direction to lower the gas pressure through the system. Keep an eye on the pressure gauge to monitor your setting.

  4. 4

Replace the cap on the regulator and tighten with the wrench.

  5. 5

    Switch on the gas valve.

Tips and warnings

  • These steps apply to a residential propane tank. Small cylinders, such as the 5-gallon bottles commonly used with gas grills, are set at a fixed pressure to operate with the grill regulator, which is also set to a fixed pressure. Do not attempt to adjust these smaller tanks.
