Pen Tablets are devices that use an object shaped like a pen as a mouse. A pen tablet PC will allow the user to write directly on the computer screen. By using screencast software, you can record what you write on the screen as a movie. Video editing software will allow you to add sound and text to your video, but video editing software is not required to make a video of pen tablet writing.

Skill level:

Things you need

  1. 1

Install screencast software. This software can be found on the Internet, sometimes for free. Camstudio and Wink are two open-source programs available for free on the Internet (see References).

  2. 2

Open your screencast software. Some programs will allow the user to define what section of the screen is recorded. Open your image editing software. Start recording on your screencast software and write on your image editor whatever you want to capture on video. Depending on your software and your computer's hardware, your computer may slow down during the recording process. When you are finished writing, stop the recording.

  3. 3

Using your screencast software, export the video you recorded. The video should export as an .mp4, .avi or .mov, depending on the software.

  4. 4

Optionally, you can edit your video using video editing software, such as Windows Live Movie Maker. This step is not required unless you want to add text, sound or additional images or clips to your video or if you want to delete scenes from your video.

Tips and warnings

  • The quality of your screencast will depend on the software you are using.
