How to Solvent Weld PVC Pipe

Solvent welding polyvinyl chloride pipe is the technical term for a process for gluing plastic together. The PVC cement is applied like a glue, but it temporarily dissolves the PVC in the pipe and fuses it together as a solid piece. This bond is essential in creating a leakproof joint for the plumbing applications in which PVC is used.

Assemble the PVC pipe to the coupler in the desired configuration.

Mark the fitting with a pencil by drawing a line over the coupler and pipe to aid you in placing the pieces together in the same alignment once you apply the cement.

Apply PVC primer to the exterior of the pipe and the interior of the coupler to assist in softening the PVC pipe and to allow for a better solvent weld.

Coat the interior of the coupler and the exterior of the pipe with PVC cement. Apply an even coat all the way around both pieces to ensure a water tight seal.

Quickly fit the coupler over the pipe and align the pieces according to the pencil mark.

Wipe any excess solvent from the pipe with a clean cloth.

Allow the solvent to dry for a few minutes before handling the pipe.


Always apply solvents and primers in a well ventilated area.
