How to make plastic canvas bookmark crosses
Mark your spot in a book with a homemade bookmark cross. (book image by Pali A from Fotolia.com)

A plastic canvas cross bookmark is an inexpensive craft that anyone can do. Use one colour or a combination of colours to create a one-of-a-kind bookmark. If a child is completing the task, Kaboose recommends an adult supervise the activity. When completed, use the bookmark to save your spot in a Bible or other book you're reading.

Instructions

  1. 1

Cut out a cross on plastic canvas. You can make the cross as big or as small as you want, but make sure there are an even number of holes on each arm of the cross.

  2. 2

Weave lanyard cording through the plastic canvas, starting on the top far left side of the canvas. You will want to leave about 3 inches of cording on the end free. Weave the cording in a downward pattern towards the bottom of the canvas. You will create a straight pattern.

  3. 3

Loop the cord through the last hole on the bottom of the cross and then begin weaving upward, stopping in the middle of the cross.

  4. 4

Weave the lanyard in a diagonal pattern in the centre of the cross. Weave the rest of the cross using the same pattern as you started until you reach the top of the cross.

  5. 5

Cut the end of the cording so there is only 3 inches remaining. This should match the length of the cording you started with.

  6. 6

Weave the cording through the arms of the cross, starting on the top left side. Stop once you reach the centre of the cross.

  7. 7

Stretch the cording across the back of the cross, over the diagonal pattern. Continue weaving on the right side of the cross. When you reach the end of a row, loop the cording the same way you did before and begin weaving the subsequent rows.

  8. 8

Tie the ends of the cording together on the back of the left arm and cut any excess cording.

  9. 9

Tie the ends of the cord at the top of the cross and attach the pony beads. Tie another knot to secure the beads.
