Bed bugs are parasitic insects that feed on the blood of any animal, including humans. They spread easily in infested furniture and luggage, or through cracks in walls. Careful examination of a mattress will usually reveal evidence of bed bug infestation, including black droppings or the bugs themselves. Bed bugs hide in crevices in mattresses, in clothing, in cracks in furniture, and along the baseboards of a room. Careful cleaning of the area and a final treatment with pesticides will remove the bugs.

  1. 1

Remove all bedding and washable clothing from the room. Wash them in the clothes washer at the hottest setting possible, which should be at least 48.9 degrees Celsius. Dry them at the highest heat setting as well.

  2. 2

Put all dry-clean only bedding or clothing in the dryer on high heat for at least 20 minutes. Dry any shoes or non-plastic toys in the same way.

  3. 3

Encase the mattress and box spring in a zippered, hypoallergenic cover and dispose of them both in a dumpster. You cannot use most pesticides on beds, and the bed bugs can burrow into hidden cracks and crevices in the mattress or box spring, making them almost impossible to thoroughly clean.

  4. 4

Pull all the furniture away from the wall to the centre of the room, and remove all paintings or wall hangings. Thoroughly vacuum in each area where the furniture was located. Use the hose attachment of your vacuum to vacuum the walls and baseboards.

  5. 5

Use the hose attachment to vacuum each piece of furniture. Remove all drawers, and turn the furniture upside down to vacuum each surface.

  6. 6

Purchase a pesticide specifically intended for bed bugs and apply it to all surfaces of the room, according to the package directions.
