How to Remove a Spinning Lock Lug Nut

Updated July 20, 2017

A spinning lock lug nut is a special lug nut designed to prevent the wheels on a vehicle from being stolen. It requires a special key-like socket to remove. In the event that the vehicle owner misplaces the key socket, it can be removed with a special broken lug nut removal socket. These sockets contain special teeth that grip rounded lug nuts and lock lug nuts in order to remove them. Lug nut removal sockets are available from auto parts stores and automotive tool manufacturers.

Place the lug nut removal socket over the spinning lock lug nut you wish to remove.

Put a small block of wood on top of the lug nut removal socket and pound the socket down on top of the lock lug nut until it's completely seated.

Insert a 1/2-inch ratchet extension into the lug nut removal socket. Attach a 1/2-inch ratchet to the ratchet extension.

Turn the ratchet in a counterclockwise direction to loosen and remove the lock lug nut. Remove the lock lug nut from the removal socket and discard it.
