How to make a truck birthday cake

Updated February 21, 2017

Birthday cakes can take on a variety of shapes, depending on the guest of honor's interests. A cake can be one of the feature decorative pieces of a birthday party, and can complement the party's theme. If your little one loves trucks and has a toy chest full of them, use these as inspiration to create a truck-shaped birthday cake that your child will remember.

Preheat the oven per the batter instructions.

Select a cake mix in your child's favourite flavour, or prepare the batter from scratch.

Grease and flour the pans to prevent the batter from sticking. Pour the batter into loaf-shaped cake pans -- one large loaf pan, and one smaller.

Bake the cakes at the appropriate temperature for the appropriate amount of time. The smaller loaf will require less time.

Allow the cakes to cool, then remove them from the loaf pans.

Connect the two cakes together by spreading a thin layer of icing on one of the narrow ends of the larger loaf and sticking it to the other. The larger cake should be behind the smaller, as it will form the truck bed. Trim the smaller loaf to make it proportionate to a truck cab, i.e. it should be about 1/4 the length of the truck bed.

Ice both of the cakes, or cover them with fondant in your child's favourite colour. Use cookie cutters to cut shapes out of the fondant to attach to the truck, such as your little one's initials, or his age. Don't forget to add a few black or light blue rectangles to the front and sides of the cab to represent windows.

Spread icing on the top of the larger loaf, line it with black or red liquorice and sprinkle crumbled cookies and trail mix on top of the icing to represent the load.

Connect wheels to the truck by placing toothpicks through chocolate-covered doughnuts and connecting the doughnuts to the sides of the cake. You can fill in the doughnut holes with balls of silver or black fondant to represent hub cabs.

Preheat the oven and prepare your cake batter. Grease and flour the pan.

Pour the batter into a pan shaped like a fire truck. Bake the cake according to the batter instructions.

Remove the cake from the oven and cover it with red fondant or icing. Cut out fondant pieces for the truck windows, or cut out stars or fire hats to decorate the sides of the truck.

Spread icing on chocolate cookies that are large enough to serve as wheels, and stick the wheels to the sides of the cake.

Use long strips of liquorice or pretzel sticks to form a ladder on the side of the fire truck.
