Writing descriptive essays can be difficult, even if the subject is a close friend or family member. Sometimes, writing about someone close to you can be even more difficult than writing about an imaginary character, because you are pressured to describe the person accurately and effectively. The key to writing effective descriptive essays is to choose just a few strong characteristics of the person in question, and then use these characteristics to help build an essay that best describes this person.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Think of characteristics of your mother that affect you or have affected you, such as her ability to help solve your life's problems or her financial advice and knowledge.

  2. 2

Write a list of these characteristics on a sheet of paper.

  3. 3

Think of specific situations in your past in which your mother has exemplified these characteristics. For example, to show her ability to give advice, you could recall how you consulted her when you made a large purchase.

  4. 4

Write examples for each characteristic you have listed.

  5. 5

Circle the examples that would make interesting stories, especially the ones that you can remember in detail. Choose one example and characteristic.

  6. 6

Think of and write down some characteristics of your mother that may not affect you, but may affect others in your life, such as her friendliness towards strangers.

  7. 7

Choose the most interesting characteristics and think of at least one example for each characteristic.

  8. 8

Begin your essay by describing your story related to one of your mother's characteristics. First set the scene, and then write about how this scene exemplifies these characteristics of your mother.

  9. 9

Expand your essay by writing about characteristics of your mother that not only affect you, but affect others as well.

  10. 10

Conclude by summarising the characteristics you have described throughout your essay.
