Bead rope necklaces have been seen on runways and in jewellery collections, and are becoming a fashion staple. With prices in stores ranging from £26 and up, as of 2011, you can create an entire collection of bead rope necklaces for what you might pay for one ready-made. The size of beads and thread can be adjusted once you master the technique, which makes the possibilities for combinations limited by only your imagination.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • Crochet thread, size 10
  • Steel crochet hook, size 7
  • Pony beads: 144 each of 3 different colours
  • Clasp jewellery finding
  • Scissors

  1. 1

Thread the beads onto your crochet thread in an alternating pattern of Color A, Color B, Color C. Do not cut the thread from the skein or spool.

  2. 2

Make a slip knot in the end of your thread, leaving a tail of 6 to 8 inches. Slide the slip knot onto your crochet hook.

  3. 3

Slide one bead up the thread until it rests against the crochet hook. Make a chain stitch over the bead to secure it. Repeat with five additional beads, so that you have a chain of six beads captured inside of six chain stitches. Join with a slip stitch to the first chain stitch.

  4. 4

Slide the next bead that is strung on the thread up against your hook, and make a slip stitch over it into the same chain stitch. Continue this way in a spiral, attaching each bead to the bead in the previous row with a slip stitch, keeping the thread to the inside of the hollow rope you are creating.

  5. 5

Cut the thread, leaving a six inch tail, after all the beads have been used. Weave the tail back through your last stitch and pull tight, then knot off. This should leave you with a necklace that is approximately 18 inches long.

  6. 6

Slide one end of the clasp finding onto the tail. Secure with a square knot tied snugly against the beads. Weave the end through the first row of beads, pull snug, and cut off any excess. Repeat with the tail at the start of the necklace.

Tips and warnings

  • Use crystal clear glass beads with variegated thread for a diffuse, rainbow effect.
  • Metallic thread inside of semi-opaque, opalescent beads creates a delicate, evening sparkle.
  • Be sure you have enough thread before you start working. One inch of finished work uses approximately one yard of unworked thread.
