The Joomla content management system serves as the foundation for millions of websites around the world. The Joomla platform allows Web publishers to quickly create feature-rich websites and populate those sites with up-to-date content and media. One of the most common questions from novice Joomla users is how to change the footer text. The footer on a Joomla site is actually a PHP file that you must edit if you want to change the default text. When editing the PHP file, you can change the default Joomla footer text to something of your choosing or delete the footer text altogether.

  1. 1

Browse to the URL address for your Web hosting control panel. Log in to the control panel with your username and password.

  2. 2

Launch "File Manager," "FTP Tool," File Editor" or other similar application in the web hosting control panel.

  3. 3

Navigate to the "Includes" folder in the root directory of your Joomla-enabled website. Double-click the folder name to view its contents.

  4. 4

Scroll down to the "footer.php" file. Highlight the file name, and then click the "Edit" or "Change" button on the file manager tool bar.

  5. 5

Scroll down to the point in the "footer.php" file that begins with the text "//NOTE -- Change this section of text to suit your site needs" or something similar. The exact text shown in the file will depend upon the version of Joomla you are using on your site. Regardless, the text should always start with "//NOTE."

  6. 6

Change the footer text following the "?>" symbol that follows the intro text on the line. Delete the original text or add hyperlinks to make the text more appropriate for your site. For instance, your Joomla "footer.php" file may contain the text "Powered by Joomla." In this case, you can delete the text for a blank footer. Alternatively, change it to something like "Copyright" or any other text you want to display at the bottom of your web pages.

  7. 7

Click the "Save" button on the menu tool bar at the top of the screen. Close the text editor and the control panel. Open your Joomla website to review the changes in the footer text at the bottom of your home page.
