How to choose a fence color

Your fence is one of the first things a visitor or passer-by notices about your home, since it surrounds some portion of the house. If you want to give your house a style boost, make sure the colour of the fence fits with the house. Choosing a colour for the fence is a matter of preference, but there are a few things to consider to create a good match.

  1. 1

Take a picture of your house and fence, load it into your computer and print off the photo several times.

  2. 2

Colour in the fence on the photos with different colours to see what basic colours look best. Try different browns to see how a stained wood would look, along with black, white and other colours. Also try a colour that is similar to your house colour, but in a slightly darker or lighter shade.

  3. 3

Look at the pictures to narrow down your choices. When you decide on a colour, go to the store and get paint samples of the colour in different shades. Home improvement stores will mix samples for a small fee.

  4. 4

Paint the samples on the fence to see what you like best. If you go with a stain, then you will need to narrow it down to a few shades of brown. Once narrowed down, get a piece of wood of the same type as your fence. Stain the board with the samples. Stand in front of your house and hold up the sample board to see what the different shades look like. Choose one you like best.
