To make porcelain clay flowers, you'll use the same process as you would making flowers from potter's clay or polymer clay. The difference is the consistency of the clay. Porcelain clay is a very fine, lightweight clay that is easily manipulated to create the desired flower shape. Roses and tulips use small, round balls of clay flattened into petals while a garlic press creates the petals for a spider mum. The pieces are glued together with porcelain slip, which is a mixture of porcelain clay and water.

- Measuring spoons
- Small container with lid
- Craft stick
- Small artist paintbrush
- Parchment paper
- Garlic press
- Craft knife
Use a small container and mix together 1 tbsp of water and a 1-inch ball of porcelain clay to create porcelain slip. Use a craft stick to break apart the porcelain clay and distribute evenly throughout the water. Set aside.
Roll a 1/2-inch ball of porcelain clay to use as the centre. Roll twelve 3/8-inch balls of porcelain clay to use for the petals. Sit the balls on a 12-by-12-inch piece of parchment paper.
Pick up one 3/8-inch porcelain ball and squeeze it between your thumbs and forefingers to create a teardrop shape. Flatten the teardrop shape by squeezing the clay between your thumb and forefinger to create the first petal. Lay aside. Repeat the process with the remaining eleven 3/8-inch porcelain balls.
Pick up a petal. Brush a thin layer of slip over the pointed tip of the petal. Use four petals in each layer. Secure the petal to the bottom edge of the 1/2-inch round centre. Repeat the process with the second petal and place it directly across from the first. Brush slip on the tips of the final two petals. Center each petal between the two petals already connected to the ball. Make sure the four petals are evenly spaced from one another.
Pick up a petal and brush a thin layer of slip over the pointed tip. Center the middle of the petal over the side edge of the petal directly below. Repeat this process with four petals in each row. Continue the process until all petals are attached to the centre. Optional: Curl the rounded edge of the petal to make the rose look full. Use a toothpick to add the veins in the petals.
Roll one 1/2-inch ball of porcelain clay and four 3/4-inch balls. Set aside.
Place the 1/2-inch ball of clay between your thumbs and forefingers and squeeze it into a teardrop shape. Roll the tear drop shape between your thumb and forefingers to elongate the shape to 1-inch. Keep the integrity of the shape so it looks like a long snow cone. Set aside.
Make petals from the four 3/4-inch balls of porcelain clay. Squeeze the 3/4-inch ball of porcelain clay so it looks like a pill capsule rather than a ball. Flatten the shape between your thumb and forefinger. Set aside. Repeat the process with each ball.
Use the longest length of the petals as the petal height. Drape the top 1/4-inch of the petal over your index finger. Gently curl the tip. Brush a coat of slip over the bottom 1/4-inch of the petal.
Pick up the cone centre. Use the large, round end as the base. Secure the bottom of the petal to the base of the cone. Repeat the process with shaping and slipping the second petal. Place the second petal directly across from the first. Center the remaining two petals between the first two.
Roll a 1/2-inch ball of porcelain clay. Squeeze it between your thumb and forefinger until it is 1/4-inch thick. Set aside.
Fill the chamber in a garlic press three-quarters full with porcelain clay. Squeeze the garlic press to extrude the clay until the extrusions are 1/2-inch long. Slide a craft knife along the surface of the garlic press to remove half of the porcelain clay.
Brush a coat of slip over the piece of centre clay. Gently slide the extruded clay from the craft knife onto the centre clay surface. Repeat the process until the entire centre is covered with clay extrusions.
