You use an Apple ID to access Apple resources that require you to identify yourself, such as registering Apple products, making a reservation to speak with an expert at an Apple Store's Genius Bar, using Apple's online support and making purchases at the Apple Online Store and the iTunes store. You don't need to enter credit card information to make an Apple ID. All you need to supply is your name and contact information. Later, if you want to use your Apple ID to make purchases, you will need to update it with payment information.
