Hiding your ISP Address will protect your anonymity. (computer image by Hao Wang from

An ISP, or Internet Service Provider, address is the web address of your service provider, which assigns your computer its own IP address. As both your IP and ISP addresses can be a method of identifying you, for reasons of security it is often a good idea to conceal them, and the best way of achieving this is to use a proxy server. A proxy server is a computer system or program that acts as an intermediary for a client, thereby protecting his or her anonymity.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Download a proxy server. Popular choices include, Proxyway and Proxify. You may have to pay a subscription fee for your server, but there are many free alternatives available.

  2. 2

The proxy server will need to know which browser (such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari) you are using. The software may automatically configure itself for your browser.

  3. 3

You will have to enable your proxy server if you wish to use your browser anonymously. To do this with Firefox click "Tools", and then "Options" in the browser menu. Click on "Advanced" and then "Network", and then open the "Connection" section and click "Settings." Click "Manual proxy configuration" and enter your IP address and port number, then click "OK."

  4. 4

To enable Internet Explorer click on "Tools" and then "Internet Options." Then click on "Connections" and "LAN settings" Tick the box labelled, "Use a proxy server for your LAN" in the Proxy Server section. Enter the IP address and port number, select "Bypass proxy server for local addresses" and click "OK."

  5. 5

To enable Safari, open Safari, click at the name "Safari" at the top of the screen, click "Preferences", then "Advanced" and "Change settings." Click on the check box next to "Web Proxy (HTTP)" and enter you IP address and port number, then click "Apply now."
