A way to guarantee your guests an entertaining time is with karaoke, since its something that pretty much anybody can enjoy even if they are not actually doing the singing themselves. Karaoke machines, however, can be fairly expensive. Luckily, if you have a computer and some knowledge of application design, you can create your own karaoke program that runs right on your family desktop or laptop.

Things you need

  • Visual Studio Express

  1. 1

Download and install Microsoft's Visual Studio 2010 Express; this is a free tool that is used to develop applications for the Windows operating system, Microsoft's Web platforms, and Windows Phone 7. This will automatically install all the other tools that you need to develop your application, including the .Net Framework and the C# programming language. Note: you can use a different programming language than C#, such as Visual Basic and F#, to program your application as all of the .Net languages are installed with Visual Studio.

  2. 2

Start Visual Studio and select "new" from the "file" menu. You will be shown a menu with different types of applications grouped according to their programming language and targeted platform. Select a "Windows Form Application" project; it does not matter what language you chose, so pick the one that you are most comfortable with or if you have no programming chose C#, since it has become something of a standard for Windows programming. You will be required to enter a name for your application and tell Visual Studio where you would like the application's source code to be saved on your computer. You can also choose to save the code to a remote drive.

  3. 3

Click on the "design" tab to design your application's graphical user interface. From here you can simply drag and drop widgets of common windows controls, such as buttons and text fields, into your application. Since you are designing a karaoke program, you are probably going to want to have buttons for available songs and a text field that will display the songs' lyrics. However, there are a number of different design approaches and you should feel free to take any approach that you prefer for your user interface.

  4. 4

Click the .cs tab to go back to your applications source code. It is now time to begin coding your application. Though the actual code will depend on the programming language you have chosen to work on and the specifics of your custom karaoke application, there are some basic functionalities that your application will probably want to include: the song selector, for instance. A simple pseud-code example for this is "on Click() { textbox.text = SONGNAME.lyrics;}". In the example, when the user clicks a button the text box will be filled with the lyrics of the corresponding song and the audio for that song will be played.

  5. 5

Debug you application before attempting to use it publicly or releasing it to the general public. This means making sure that everything in the application behaves as intended and the application does not crash or worse cause the user's system to crash.
