Creating shading and wrinkles for Second Life (SL) clothing may take some practice, but it is both interesting and challenging. Second Life avatars can change clothing, and the clothing is part of your inventory. You can either purchase clothes or make them yourself in a graphics creation software program. Basically, you create a texture to layer on top of the avatar framework. Online templates and tutorials are available to help you with that piece of the clothes-making process. Undertaking shading and wrinkle techniques to provide texture and depth requires an SL basic clothing piece.

Create a new layer that is in addition to the template layer and clothing piece layer you already have in the graphics file.
Reduce the clothing layer's opacity. This allows you to see the framework of the body template underneath.
Select tool brush attributes. Begin by choosing the brush from the graphics creation software program's toolbar. Select a moderate to fairly wide brush dimension to use on the new layer. Use black or dark grey for your first colour.
Draw lines where you want shadows, using a template framework for reference. For instance, if you were working on a shirt, you would shade along the sides of the body, underneath the breasts or chest muscles, down the spine and at the clavicle.
Add contrast. Select the dodge tool from the toolbar. Then draw just above the first lines so that contrast exists. Next, highlight areas that would naturally catch more light, such as the tops of shoulders and breasts.
Apply blur to shading. Go to the Filters menu and select "Blur." Then select "Gaussian Blur." Choose your preferred level of blur, and apply it to your shading.

Add contrast. Select the dodge tool from the toolbar. Then draw just above the first lines so that you see contrast.
Apply blur to wrinkles. Select the blur tool, and make the dimension fairly wide, at least as wide as your original brush and dodge tools. Move the blur tool over either end of each of your sets of wrinkle lines to blend them together and to smooth them. Select "Blur" from the Filter menu, and select "Gaussian Blur." Choose your preferred level of blur, and apply it to the wrinkles.
Tips and warnings
- You can make separate layers for your brush and dodge drawings, and then combine them using the "Merge Layers" function in the "Layers" menu. You can merge wrinkles and shading in the same way.
- Using different widths of brush for shading and dodging may provide a more realistic appearance.
- If you can't figure out where to shade or add wrinkles to avatar clothing, look in a mirror to see where shading and wrinkles appear naturally on your clothing.
