You do not have to rely on finding the perfect card anymore -- you can easily create one with a computer. If you're giving a birthday card to a Christian friend, you can make your own card, selecting everything from the verse inside the card to the image on the outside. There are countless ways to customise your card, either embellishing it to showcase your artistic talent and crafting skills or keeping it simple. By making the card yourself, you will give something unique that the recipient will cherish much more than a mass-produced card.

Skill level:

Things you need

  1. 1

Spend some time thinking about how you want the card to look. Determine if you want a plain white or cream card stock or a more unusual colour. Also decide if you will fold the sheet of A4 paper in half lengthwise or horizontally to make a card. A4 is a size designation for paper. Its dimensions are 8.3 inches by 11.7 inches, making it slightly longer and narrower than the North American A or letter-size paper that is 8.5 inches by 11 inches.

  2. 2

Decide what image you want for the front of the card. You can scan in a favourite photo or other image in hard-copy form. You also can find an image you like on the web and save it to your computer.

  3. 3

Open a word-processing or page-layout program on your computer. Type out your selected Bible verse along with any other message for your friend or relative. Try out different font styles, colours and sizes to see what looks best. Use the software to select the right page orientation and size to represent the way the card will look as a folded sheet of paper. You may have to customise the paper size dimensions since A4 paper does not exactly match the standard letter size paper.

  4. 4

Insert your chosen front-of-card image using the word-processing or page-layout software to access it from the file where you saved on your computer. Place the image so that it will appear on the front of the card. Experiment with different image sizes and framing effects. Remember the image and the verse have to be either two separate pages of the same document or two different documents.

  5. 5

Print out a practice card on an ordinary sheet of computer paper. Print the image onto one side of a sheet of A4 computer paper. Print the verse on the other side. When you fold the sheet of paper, the image should appear on the front of the card and the verse on the inside. Look at this trial version of the card, and decide if you want to change anything. Make any adjustments you feel are necessary to improve the card. Then insert your sheet of A4 card stock paper in the printer. Print the card onto the card stock, then fold it into a card. Sign your name inside below the verse. Insert the card into an envelope.
