Every vehicle will need repair at some point in its lifetime. Motor scooters are no exception. Their small wheels will sustain much more damage travelling over potholed and rough roads than the wheels of a larger vehicle and will likely need to be replaced, or at least undergo a tire change, which can easily be done. Most scooters don't have room to carry a spare, so it is best to check your tires and wheels before and after each ride to be sure they are in good working condition. The steps necessary to remove the wheels are basically the same for every 49cc or 50cc scooter. The process is slightly different for the front and back wheels.
Removing the front wheel
Place your scooter on its centre stand.
Take the hub cap off your front wheel. You may have to use a screwdriver to pop it off the wheel. Put the hub cap aside face down for use as a receptacle for nuts, bolts and screws. You may want to lay it on a rag or towel to prevent the cover from getting scuffed.
Remove the nut from the bolt in the centre of the wheel, holding the bolt on the left-hand side of the scooter with your other hand. You may have to use a socket wrench to do this. If your bolt is on too tightly to remove manually, you may have to use an impact driver to remove it.
Remove the nut from the bolt on the left side of the wheel.
Remove the arm connecting the shock and the front fork from the bolt in the centre of the wheel.
Remove the disc brake from the bolt in the centre of the wheel, if necessary. Some disc brakes can remain on the wheel when it is removed from the scooter.
Holding the wheel with one hand, lift the scooter handlebars upward until you can pull the wheel from the scooter. The axle, and spacers if your scooter wheel has them, should still be in the centre of the wheel.
Removing the Rear Wheel
Unscrew the two or three screws holding the heat shield to the muffler, then remove the two or three bolts holding the muffler onto the exhaust pipe, which is the large pipe underneath the scooter that connects your muffler and the engine. Older model scooters may have an exhaust manifold that sits on the outside of the muffler. You will have to remove the nuts holding the manifold onto the muffler before you remove the muffler.
Remove the bolts holding the muffler onto the scooter, and lay the muffler and heat shield aside.
Remove the bolts holding the shock to the rear wheel. There may be one or two bolts, depending upon your model of scooter.
Remove the bolts holding the mud guard bracket onto the wheel, if your scooter has this feature.
Remove the nut on the right side of the scooter that holds the wheel onto the transmission, which is located on the left side of most scooters.
Slide the wheel off the bolt from the transmission.
If the bolts on your scooter wheels are on too tightly to remove manually, you may have to use an impact driver spanner to remove it. Place all nuts and bolts you remove in the upturned hub cap so you do not lose them. To give yourself more room underneath the scooter wheels, place a flat piece of wood under the centre stand to lift the scooter up higher.
Do not try removing the wheels unless you have a centre stand on your scooter or a separate stand to raise your scooter off the ground. The stand should be sturdy, support the scooter in the centre and not easily give way when you are working on your wheels. When putting the disc brake back on the front wheel, you will have to readjust it.
