Church kneelers are a common addition in many churches that forsake the regular pews. There is no "one size fits all" church kneeler, though. If you want to experience comfort when you kneel down and pray, make your own church kneeler. When you make your own church kneeler, you can fit it to your measurements, making it more comfortable than a kneeler that is either too small or too large for your body type. Remember to keep it modest or it may cause distractions.

Measure the length of your leg from your knee to your ankle. This tells you how large you should make your kneeling platform. If this platform is too small, your legs will grow tired faster.
Measure the amount of room your legs take up when you kneel in a traditional prayer position. Some church kneelers are large enough to accommodate several worshippers, but if this is your custom kneeler, it only needs to be big enough for you.
Cut a piece of board to the correct width and length to accommodate your kneeling frame. Use a piece of wood no thicker than an inch. Sand down the sides to remove splinters and scorch marks.
Cut three strips of wood (2 inches thick and 3 inches tall) at the length of your kneeling board. Flip your kneeling board on its front (so the bottom is facing towards you). Nail the three strips of wood at even intervals across the bottom of the kneeler platform. Place one on each side and one right down the middle of the platform with the 2-inch side of the wood coming into contact with the kneeler platform.
Flip the platform over, keeping the wood strips in place as you do. The strips of wood should elevate your platform. Drive wood screws through the kneeling platform and into the wood strips below, securing them into place.
Kneel in a prayer position on the kneeler platform and ask an assistant to measure the distance from your mid forearm to the floor. Cut two strips of 2-inch thick wood to this length. Place these two pieces of wood at the front of your kneeler platform, flush with the two strips of wood on either side of the underside of the platform.
Ask an assistant to brace the back of the kneeler platform while you hammer the two strips of wood into the wood under the kneeler platform. Now, if you kneel on the platform, two tall pieces of wood will rise up in front of you on either side.
Cut a plank of wood (wide enough to set a book on) at the same width as your kneeling platform. Set this plank of wood over the two vertical strips of wood and hammer it into place.
Coat the kneeler platform in wood glue. Set a square cushion (the same size of the platform) onto the platform to spare your knees.
Tips and warnings
- Stain the wood to give it an elegant appearance.
- Do not rest much of your weight on the vertical plank meant to hold your books. The wood may break if you lean too heavily against it.
